when i was a teenager, christian music consisted of not much more than stryper, petra & amy grant. it was pretty sad really. so it’s been awesome to see what i can only describe as an explosion of christian artists come onto the scene over the last few years. i’m finding some of their lyrics are very thoughtful & thought-provoking. so i figured i’d dedicate a page to some of my favourites in the hope that others might enjoy or even benefit from their insights. i’ll add to it over time so keep dropping back.
here we go…
‘failure is a blessing in disguise’ (relient k devastation and reform, cd: five score & seven y
ears ago)
‘we are a beautiful letdown,
painfully uncool
the church of the dropouts, the losers, the sinners, the failures, and the fools’
(switchfoot the beautiful letdown, cd: the beautiful letdown)
‘quit fooling around
give love to the ones who can’t love at all
give hope to the ones who’ve got no hope at all
stand up for the ones who can’t stand at all’
(jon foreman instead of a show, cd: summer ep)
‘why pluck one string when you can strum the guitar?’ (mewithoutYou torches together, cd: catch for us the foxes)
‘this one last bullet you mention
is my one last shot at redemption
’cause i know to live you must give your life away…’
‘i’ve given up on doing this alone now
’cause i’ve failed and i’m ready to be shown how
he’s told me the way and i’m trying to get there
and this life sentence that i’m serving
i admit that i’m every bit deserving
but the beauty of grace is that it makes life not fair’ (relient k be my escape, cd: mmhmm)
‘no one here to believe but you
everyone else is bound to leave but you
when they swear their love is real
they mean ‘i like the way you make me feel’
no one here to believe but you
there’s no one here to believe than you’ (mewithoutYou everythought a thought of you, cd: it’s all crazy! it’s all false! it’s all a dream! it’s alright)

Toby Keith
If I Was Jesus, I’d come back from the dead
And I’d walk on some water, just to mess with your head
I know your dark little secrets, I’d look you right in the face
And I’d tell you I love you, with Amazing Grace.
Cause there’s room at Jesus table
For all to come and go
The Host ain’t quite as formal as some believe
You know Jesus was a wanderer
And the highway was his call
And his feet sometimes wore bandages
And his following was small
But his faith shone like the twelve-fifteen
On the subway station wall
He made it, and with his helping
I can make it too
